Sugar  Industry  Reaches Out to Typhoon “Ondoy” Victims

The sugar industry, through the sugar mills and its industry organizations, quickly manifested its high sense of social responsibility by donating a total of 900 bags of sugar and P 700,000 in cash donations for the victims of typhoon “Ondoy” in the National Capital Region (NCR) as of Friday, October 9, 2009.

The Philippine Sugar Millers Association (PSMA) coordinated with its members for relief assistance to the typhoon victims and the first one to respond was Capiz Sugar Central, Inc. which delivered 100 bags of sugar to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) that was then turned over to the DSWD distribution center at the NFA Warehouse in Diliman, Quezon City. 

Upon the request of Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap that donated sugar be delivered directly to the DSWD distribution center in Quezon City, seven more sugar mills, namely, Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Co., Inc., Central Azucarera de Don Pedro, Central Azucarera de Tarlac, First Farmers Holding Corp., Busco Sugar Milling Co., Inc., Crystal Sugar Co., Inc. and Victorias Milling Company each delivered 100 bags of sugar directly to the DSWD distribution center at the NFA Warehouse in Diliman, Quezon City.

Administrator Rafael L. Coscolluela of the Sugar Regulatory Administration also coordinated with the Sugar Industry Foundation, Inc. (SIFI) for a joint donation of 100 bags of sugar to the DSWD distribution center at the Kalayaan Hall of Malacañang Palace.

On the other hand, a cash donation of PhP 500,000 was given by Lopez Sugar Corporation through ABS-CBN, while CONFED (Negros-Panay Chapter) donated PhP 200,000.00 in cash through Malacañang’s Kalayaan Hall relief operations coordination center.
