Hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of an akaganeite-type iron oxide octahedral molecular sieves (FeOx OMS) by direct dissolution and transformation of layered precursor to 2x2 tunnel structure Pamela V. Alfornon Iron oxide octahedral molecular sieve with 2x2 tunnel, designated as FeOx-OMS (2x) was successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method. They can be used as adsorbents of toxic and heavy metals such as lead and mercury to address water pollution. This OMS materials are also potential catalysts for partial and total oxidation that can be used as catalytic converters.
Levels and sources of significant wastewater parameters in selected sugar mills in Negros, Philippines.Raphael Henri B. Mundo, Ma. Cristina V. Dimapilis, Agnes G. Collado, Oscar L. Cortez Wastewater samples in two sugar mills were analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics from November 1997 to February 1998. the significant wastewater parameters (BOD5 COD, pH, TSS, oil and grease) were analyzed using standard analytical procedures.
The study focuses on the levels and sources of significant wastewater parameters for possible base-line information on the physico-chemical characteristics of sugar mill waste.
Previous data on two sugar mills in Luzon, together with the data from Negros were used for correlation study between COD and BOD5. Statistical results established a moderate linear relationship, with a correlation coefficient of r=0.47304 (n=90), between the two parameters using sugarcane wastewater.
Investigation of wastewater effluents and the anti-pollution facilities in some Negros mills Rosie M. Tapay
One of the major improvements in the sugar industry in recent years is the development of technology for the treatment of mill effluents. The general awareness on environmental concerns has increased and both the government and the industry are taking their own initiatives and showing greater responsibility, some embarking on self-monitoring scheme.
A survey on several mills in Negros (7 mills) showed that analysis of the TSS, BOD5, and COD of mill washings of four (4) mills did not pass the standard set by DENR. For condenser water, two (2) mills passed the BOD5 standard. The TSS analysis of the factory discharge and condenser water were within the standard limit. The flow rate of the different effluents ranged from 465 cu.m./day to 74,440 cu.m./day. Analysis of these effluents showed that treatments of these waste material should be given priority especially these with high pollution load to avoid being penalized by DENR.
