RDE Abstract of Completed Research
Sugarcane Pests / Stemborer
- Species Identification and
Damage Assessment of Borer Infestation on Sugarcane. Annual Report,
SRA (LAREC) (2004)
- RECUENCO, Julieta D.
-
- Borer-infested stalk samples from different
farms in Pampanga and Batangas mill districts showed that the
white top borer, Scirpophaga nivella (F) was the predominant
species of borers infesting sugarcane. The stemborer, Chilotraea
infuscatella (Sn.) had lower incidences.
-
- Infestation by the top borers started 3 months
after planting/ratooning and even on 8 months old crop. Yield
losses were higher when top borers infested 3 to 6 months old
canes. This is the stage where suitable control measures are
better adopted.
-
- Sugarcane varieties with bigger stalk diameter
are observed to have higher top borer infestations.
