RDE Abstract of Completed Research

Fertilization of Sugarcane / Validation of formula
Refinement of P & K Fertilizer Recommendation (2006)
Quilloy, O. and B. Manlapaz

Phosphorus and K uptake by the sugarcane plant were not always associated with P & K fertility of the soil.  Significant correlation of P uptake with rates of P2O5 fertilization was observed only at Bautista’s Farm and K uptake with K2O fertilization at SRA-LAREC and Coral’s Farm.

The data showed inconsistent observations on soil test values, nutrient uptake and yield response of sugarcane to varying levels of P2O5 and K2O fertilization in the different test sites. Laboratory analysis of available P and exchangeable K in the soil and leaf uptake of P and K can not be relied in assessing the P and K needs of sugarcane.

Field testing on phosphate and potash fertilizer is a better option in determining the P2O5 and K2O fertilizer needs for optimum yields of sugarcane plant and ratoon crops.

Efficiency of Fertilizer Usage on Sugarcane (2005)
A. Magnaye

Application of fertilizer whether applied in full or split dose with different methods did not produce significant differences in growth and yield data. Although the results were comparable it appears that a combination of the methods of application whether applied during early or late planting seasons produced high tonnage and sugar yield.

Validation and formulation of fertility management packages for sugarcane (2002)
Oscar Quilloy, Arturo Magnaye and Rosario Bombio

The evaluation and validation of PHILSUGIN/PHILSUCOM/SRA fertilization scheme were undertaken in response to the assessment done by some concerned groups regarding the reliability of the formulas used in estimating the N, P205 and K20 requirements of sugarcane. Sugarcane responded to N in all of the 16 test sites, 3 of 8 test sites to P205 and 5 of 10 test sites to K20 fertilization. Analysis of total N or organic matter content of the soil can be used as referenced for N fertilizer requirement using the general equation WN = 13.34 (18.79-Sn). The optimum P205 requirements were not determined experimentally. Whenever deemed necessary, 5 to 6 bags 18-46 can be applied on the plant cane only. Potash fertilizers can be applied on either plant cane or ratoon crop and the amount can be estimated using the equation WK20=6.02 (129.52-Sk).
