Flowering of parental clones and varieties in the 2005 breeding season was early and of long duration with intense full emergence during the third week of October to the first three days of November, 2005.
A total of 479 arrows from 332 bi-parental crosses were pollinated from October 14 to November 25, 2005 using 97 selected female and 69 male parents. From these, 475 arrows from 332 bi-parental crosses were harvested (Table 1).
Sowing of fuzz which was done from November 18 to December 23, 2005 resulted in the germination of seedlings in 329 bi-parental crosses consisting of 472 arrows. Medium to good germination was observed in 90 percent of the bi-parental crosses while 10 percent had poor germination. Seedlings in the 172 bi-parental crosses which were overcrowded were pricked in 588 seedboxes.
Proper care and maintenance were given to seedlings grown in 892 seedboxes . This includes regular watering, fertilization, spraying of insecticides and fungicides, trimming of leaves, weeding and cultivation.
Distillery Slops (DS) as Soaking Solution for Canepoints (2006) Guevarra, M. and B. Manlapaz - Canepoints soaked in Raw DS at 3, 6,12, 24 hrs and Treated DS at 3, 6. 12, 24 and 48 hrs gave comparable percent germination with water and significantly higher than the untreated. The treatments were comparable in stalk height and stalk diameter. Raw DS at 12 hrs and Treated DS at 12 and 24 hrs had significantly more millable stalks/plot than water and untreated.
- Treated DS at 6, 12 and 24 hrs were significantly higher on TC/Ha than the control. Treatments were comparable on Lkg/TC. Only Treated DS at 12 hrs gave significantly higher Lkg/Ha than water and the untreated.
Pollination, Sowing and Seedling Care of Phil 2003 Series. Annual Report, SRA (LGAREC) (2004) HARDER, R.T., L.E. ALORO and R.T. ARMONES - A total of 510 arrows from 370 bi-parental crosses were pollinated from October 15 to November 19, 2003 using 72 female and 69 male selected parents. Due to good weather conditions prevailing during pollination, ripening and harvesting time, 506 arrows from 370 bi-parental crosses were harvested.
- Sowing of fuzz from November 24 to December 15, 2003 resulted in the germination of seedlings in 366 bi-parental crosses consisting of 502 arrows. Medium to good germination was observed in 91 percent of the crosses sown while 8 percent of the crosses gave poor germination. Overcrowded seedlings in 147 bi-parental crosses were pricked in 494 seed boxes.
- Seedlings in 875 seed boxes were given proper care and maintenance. These included regular watering, fertilizing, trimming of leaves, spraying of insecticide and fungicides, and weeding and cultivation prior to transplanting in May 2004.
Single Seedling Plot Test of Phil 2002 Series. Annual Report, SRA (LGAREC) (2004)HARDER, R.T., L.E. ALORO and R.T. ARMONES
From a total of 13,665 seedlings transplanted coming from 34 selfed and 79 bi-parental crosses, 8,716 seedlings survived in the field for a survival rate of 63.78 percent.
