Germplasm Collection, Characterization

- A total of 1,156 sugarcane accessions were
planted in the Germplasm Collection for CY 2003. Six locally
bred varieties from Victorias Milling Company, two varieties
from SRA Ecological Test, two foreign varieties alleged to be
Indonesian and Malaysian varieties collected from Bacolod-Murcia,
one Thailand variety from Mindanao and one collected from Canlaon
City, said to be Alunan, were collected and planted in the Germplasm
Collection field for verification/identification. Four hundred
ninety clones/varieties were characterized. Brix, number of
tillers per stool, plant height, leaf length, leaf width, stalk
length and stem diameter were the data gathered on CY 2003's
characterization to primarily provide necessary information for
selection of parent materials.
