Screening for Resistance to Smut Caused by Ustilago scitaminea (2006)

Phil 2000 Series

The distribution of reactions to smut of the 52 test clones of 2000 series was as follows: two, very highly resistant (Phil 00-248-1775 and Phil 00-273-1881); one, highly resistant (Phil 00-93-0647); three, resistant (Phil 00-139-1031, Phil 00-247-1757, Phil 00-321-2189); nine, intermediate resistant (Phil 00-134-0993, Phil 00-146-1115, Phil 00-185-1419, Phil 00-187-1429, Phil 00-193-1419, Phil 00-295-1993, Phil 00-313-2109, Phil 99-225-1593 and Phil 99-343-2755) ; six, intermediate average (Phil 00-91-0637, Phil 00-176-1323, Phil 00-291-1977, Phil 00-357-2435, Phil 00-364-2473 and Phil 00-386-2569); and the other 31 clones were rated from intermediate susceptible to very highly susceptible.

Phil 1999 Series

The reactions of 12 test clones of 1999 series to sugarcane smut were as follows: three, resistant (Phil 99-19-0177, Phil 99-325-2343 and Phil 99-351-2929); six, intermediate resistant (Phil 99-159-1189, Phil 99-192-1427, Phil 99-198-1459, Phil 99-220-1549, Phil 99-260-1793 and Phil 99-351-2899); one intermediate average (Phil 99-177-1327) and two, intermediate susceptible (Phil99-34-0383 and Phil 109-0925).

Phil 1997 (B) Series

Of the seven clones screened for resistance to downy mildew, Phil 97-1297 was rated highly resistant; Phil 97- 3041 and Phil 97-2339 were resistant; Phil 97-4151, Phil 97-3941 and Phil 97-3933 were intermediate resistant and Phil 97-2509 was susceptible.

Phil 1998 Series

Of the four clones of Phil 1998 series tested for resistance to downy mildew, two clones were rated highly resistant (Phil 98-0255 and Phil 98-2139) one was highly susceptible (Phil 98-1863) and one was very highly susceptible (Phil 98-3403).

Phil 1999 Series

Among the twelve test clones of Phil 99 series, nine were rated very highly resistant (Phil 99-0177, Phil 99-0383, Phil 99-0925, Phil 99-1327, Phil 99-1459, Phil 99-1549, Phil 99-1793 , Phil 99-2899 and Phil 99-2929); one was highly resistant (Phil 99-2343); one was intermediate resistant (Phil 99-1189); and one was highly susceptible (Phil 99-1427).


Preliminary Yield Test of 2000 series (2005)

Fifty-two test clones from the 2000 row test series with two check varieties, Phil 8013 and Phil 7544 were entered in the preliminary yield test laid-out in RCBD at LAREC. Actual agronomic/yield performance and disease reaction were compared under natural field condition at LAREC
Nine clones were comparable on TC/Ha and Lkg/Ha with the check varieties, Phil 7544 and Phil 8013. Recommended for ecological testing are Phil 00-0637, Phil 00-0647, Phil 00-1429, Phil 00-2435, Phil 00-2425, Phil 00-1901, Phil 00-0993, Phil 00-1937 and Phil 00-1323.

Among the fifty six clones of Phil 97 (A) series tested for their reactions to downy mildew, 25 were rated very highly resistant (Phil 97-0707, 0673, 1125, 0891, 0821, 0729, 0671, 1643, 0609, 0665, 1019, 2259, 2339, 2141, 0239, 0029, 2039, 0051, 0407, 0099, 0207, 2059, 2041, 0527 and 1029), 12 were highly resistant (Phil 97-0117, 1215, 1523, 0693, 0793, 3315, 0021, 2015, 0411, 2383, 2709 and 0529), 6 were resistant ( Phil 97-0727, 0045, 0097, 1901, 1123 and 0202), 6 were intermediate resistant (Phil 97-0855, 2343, 0687, 1351, 1861 and 2135) and the rest had from intermediate susceptible to very highly susceptible reaction.

Among the six clones of ’97 series screened for resistance to smut, only Phil 97-4151 was rated very highly resistant while the other five were very highly susceptible. Smut infection was higher in ratoon cane than in plant cane.

Of the four clones of 1998 series from LGAREC tested for smut reaction, only Phil 98-2137 showed intermediate resistant reaction while the others were very highly susceptible. Smut infection was higher in ratoon cane than in plant cane.

Preliminary Yield Test of Phil 1999 Series. Annual Report, SRA (LGAREC) (2004)

The study which was laid out in February, 2003 at LGAREC, La Granja, La Carlota City aimed to determine the agronomic, disease resistance and yield performance of 52 promising clones of the Phil 1999 Series. Phil 8013 and Phil 8477 were used as control varieties.
 
Results of the study showed that 16 clones were found significantly better or comparable with the control varieties Phil 8013 and Phil 8477 in LKg/TC, TC/Ha and LKg/Ha. The clones/varieties selected and recommended for further testing in the Ecological Test were as follows: Phil 99-0177, Phil 99-0383, Phil 99-0925, Phil 99-1189, Phil 99-1327, Phil 99-1427, Phil 99-1459, Phil 99-1523, Phil 99-1549, Phil 99-1623, Phil 99-1715, Phil 99-1793, Phil 99-2343, Phil 99-2641, Phil 99-2899 and Phil 99-2929.
 

Row Test of Phil 2001 Series. Annual Report, SRA (LGAREC) (2004)

A total of 451 promising clones from 151 crosses which were selected from the Phil 2001 Single Seedling Plot Test (SSPT) composed the Phil 2001 Series Row Test. Planting was done on March 13, 2003 and selection was done on December 4-13, 2003. Out of the above number of clones tested, ninety-one (91) clones from 58 crosses were selected. All selected clones were further multiplied and simultaneously tested to sugarcane smut.

A total of 300,000 micropropagated plantlets of Phil 94-0913 were produced in the LGAREC laboratory in CY 2004.
In the nursery, 260,325 plantlets were distributed; cooperative nurseries (251,500 plantlets), sold to walk-in recipients (4,000 plantlets), for demonstration purposes (3,000 plantlets) and given to OPSI trainees (1,825 plantlets).
 

Screening of LGAREC-bred sugarcane clones of the Phil 94- and Phil 95-series to smut caused by Ustilago scitaminea, Sydow; plant cane (2001)

Sixty-eight (68) clones of the Phil 94-series and (35) clones of the Phil 95- series from LGAREC PYT selections were screened for resistance to sugarcane smut.

Among the sixty eight clones of the Phil 94-series, 12 were rated very highly resistant, 2 highly resistant, 9 intermediate resistant, 5 intermediate average, 2 intermediate susceptible, 7 susceptible, 4 highly susceptible and 27 were found very highly susceptible to the disease.

On the Phil 95-series, eight (8) clones were rated very highly resistant, 3 highly resistant, 3 resistant, 7 intermediate resistant, 2 intermediate average, 2 intermediate susceptible, 2 susceptible and 8 were found very highly susceptible.


Screening of LGAREC-bred Phil 92-series (ratoon cane) to downy mildew (1998)

Out of the fifty test clones, twenty seven were very highly resistant, nine highly resistant, four resistant, two intermediate resistant and one intermediate.

Screening of Phil 87-, 88- and 89-series for downy mildew, yellow spot and mosaic (1995)

Ten '87-series, four '88-series and six '89-series were screened for downy mildew , yellow spot and mosaic. All the twenty clones of different series showed very highly resistant to downy mildew and mosaic. No yellow spot was observed on the test clones.


Screening of LGAREC-bred Phil 90-series, LAREC-bred Phil 91-series and VMC 84254 to sugarcane smut (1995)

Clones of the 90- and 91-series were tested against smut under field condition. Of 15 clones from 90-series (5) were very highly resistant, (4) intermediate resistant and (3) intermediate average, (1) intermediate susceptible (1) highly susceptible and (1) very highly susceptible. Of the 16 clones tested from the 91-series, (6) were very highly resistant, (2) intermediate resistant, (2) intermediate average, (1) highly susceptible and (5) very highly susceptible.

VMC 84524 was also very highly susceptible to smut.
